    First of all, make sure you understand what the equation y = mx + b means. m is the slope, b is the y-intercept (ie, the y-value when x = 0) and x and y just represent the x and y coordinates of points on the line.

    In this case, we can start with the slope. Be really careful with the negatives, the slope is actually:
    (7-1)/(4-(-2)) = (7-1)/(4+2) = 6/6 = 1

    At this point, you’re half-way there!

    We know that the equation is y = 1x + b, now all we need is the y-intercept (b).

    Remember an equation is just a set of points. If we know a point on the line, we can plug it into the equation and everything “works.” So if we plug one of the points (lets pick (-2,1) because those are easier numbers), we can solve for b:

    1 = (1)(-2) + b
    1 = -2 + b
    3 = b

    Therefore, the equation is y = 1x + 3 (you can also write is y = x + b, since x and 1x are the same).

    To answer the second question, you need to know that parallel lines have the same slope, so the other like also has a slope of -3/4.

    We now solve this one the same way we solved the other one.

    y = (-3/4)x + b

    3 = (-3/4)(-2) + b
    3 = 3/2 + b
    3 – 3/2 = b
    3/2 = b

    So we get: y = (-3/4)x + 3/2

    Good luck!

    Geometry: Slopes and Intercepts?
    Gah! I’m up to here (^) with slopes and y intercepts. They’re just so confusing!I got a graded worksheet back and i missed 7 out of 15 questions. How do you do these?

    The line through (4,7) and (-2,1) in slope intercept form. ( i have to put it in slope intercept y = mx +b)
    So I know I have to find the slope using the formula. I have the slope which, i think is, -6/-4. But that’s where I have no idea where to go. I don’t know how to get the y-int.

    If you could show me step by step, i could use this problem as a model, and do the rest on my own.

    Here is another one I don’t get.
    The line parallel to y = -3/4x + 5and passing through (-2, 3) in slope intercept.

    Thanks. I have a quiz tomorrow and I really want to pass.

    Does this sound like too much homework to you?
    OK so I’m in 9th grade and this is the homework I had over the weekend:

    Geometry: study/prepare for Ch. 4 test Monday
    Biology: lab write up (although not due til Dec. 1)
    German: Study word list from chapter 3A for test Monday
    Religion: answer review questions from the chapter
    English: read ch.5 and 6 in “Of Mice and Men,” fill out worksheets and a crossword puzzle for each chapter, complete project dealing with character traits of the book, write first draft of 6-8 page research paper to be peer edited on Monday and Tuesday
    Band: practice jazz band songs/practice solos and scales for final on December 1

    I’ll admit I hardly did anything yesterday, but my work load is like this every weekend. It feels like they don’t want me to do anything except schoolwork even on my days off. It’s ridiculous. I feel overloaded. I spent half the day working on that English project today, now I have to write that paper, and I still have to review for the math test. I forgot my German word list at school so I’ll probably fail that quiz. And I’ve been up until at least midnight doing homework for about the past month. And I wake up at 6. I’m only in 9th grade! Don’t they want us to sleep? I mean we have a mandatory health class and we learned about why getting adequate sleep is important, yet they give us so much homework that we can’t get enough sleep. I go to a Catholic school and I feel they’re being hypocritical and unfair. Is this normal amount of work for a 9th grader?
    THANK YOU!! Someone finally agrees with me! My parents do think it is a lot more homework than they got at my age, but they don’t do a damn thing about it. Igo to this school because of two reasons: the public school system here couldn’t teach a kid to tie a shoe, and my home school is a school with predominantly black and hispanic population, so I wouldn’t fit in well. This school is really the only option I have.
    i don’t know my english teacher likes to goive us crossword puzzles and word searches over our novels. I can’t help it. I guess it’s just another thing for us to do.

    need help with my math homework! i think its geometry or algebra!?
    know a good website that can help/give me the answers to my homework worksheet? im in 10th grade. in geometry but idk if its geometry or algebra. ty!. it looks like this (ima try my best to put this in typing)

    equations of lines
    equation __________
    passes through (3,4) & perpendicular to y = 3/2x + 3
    the 3/2 is a fraction
    ty!

    What will you recommend for me?
    I am tutoring a boy for an entrance test in 5th grade in the DPS STS School. Being a student of 6th grade, I don’t feel very confident about it….
    Their entrance test syllabus is:

    English:
    Children are expected to read an unfamiliar text in English at a reasonable speed with a fairly good comprehension
    Expected to answer questions using grammatically correct and complete sentences based on unseen passage
    Expected to give meanings of words in a context and provide antonyms or synonyms as asked
    Expected to have the ability to write grammatically correct sentences and to be able to express themselves clearly in English
    Should be able to describe objects and narrate experiences
    Punctuation
    Story Writing

    Maths:
    Expected to find fractions, factor and multiples, percentage, sum, difference and product and quotient of bigger number.
    Must know the basics of geometry and should be able to identify figures like circles, cuboids, cones, cylinders and spheres etc
    Subtraction
    Division
    Fractions and multiples
    Measurement- capacity conversion (l-ml) (gm-Kg) (m-Km)
    Multiplication- multiplying 3 digit X 2 digit
    Time- calculation duration in hours and minutes
    BODMAS
    Data Handling- Range, Mode, Median, Mean
    Probability
    Number Properties
    Divisibility by 3,4,6,8
    Multiples

    I don’t know where to start and what to do. Can you recommend some worksheet and exercises I can do to teach him? I need urgent help! His test is on Friday!

    There are other PC based programs also available like the Mathemagic Computer Tutor, or Maths Story . Its priced at 19.90 NZD and can to purchased from http://www.maths-school.co.nz.

    It’s very interactive, and makes learning Maths easy.

    Oh yes, I’m already taking honors classes. Biology,Geometry, and English. My teacher assigned the rough draft just Friday. I think he’s a really good teacher, but he just gives a shit load of homework at one time and it pisses me off. Sometimes I think he thinks that we don’t get homework in any other classes.
