Can Teacher Training Help Memphis Schools?
Author: Patricia Hawke
In the state of Tennessee Memphis Schools are lagging behind. With 80-81% of Tennesseeâs 4th grade students performing on grade level in both math and reading, the children in Memphis Schools are well behind in the 63-66% range. Dropout rates also plague Tennesseeâs largest district. 32.5% of students will drop out of Memphis Schools before graduating.
When the âNo Child Left Behind Actâ (NCLBA) was signed into law in 2002, every school in the nation became accountable for reaching a minimal level of competency. In 2004 the Tennessee Department of Education labeled 148 of Memphis Schools failures by those standards.
To address these concerns Memphis Schools have focused on math and literacy initiatives, adoptions of new textbooks, and better teacher training. In Memphis Schools, where 71% of students qualify for free or reduced lunches, the impact of teacher development in raising test scores is critical. How much influence teachers have on student achievement, and the quality of those professionals working in struggling schools, has been a topic of debate in Memphis Schools for years.
A recent million federal grant with the Peabody Center for Education Policy may help clarify some of these issues. Memphis Schools could eventually benefit, or change course, depending on the finding of trials to be funded by the grant. The five-year grant will investigate the correlation between significantly increased teacher pay and student achievement. That means a difference of several thousand versus several hundred dollars per year.
How well do Memphis Schools pay their teachers? Well, that depends. When adjusted for cost of living Memphis Schools look pretty good. Scholasticâs Instructor Magazine recently put Memphis Schools in their Top 5 list for cities where teacher pay goes the furthest. The thing is, no one is really sure how important that is. What will it mean for Memphis Schools if the grant finds little correlation between teacher pay and student achievement? It could mean teachers just arenât motivated by money. It might mean that home environment trumps schools environment. Or it could mean something else all together.
Meanwhile, Memphis Schools are trying to improve their standing by creating better community involvement and reassessing educational goals and outcomes. Ultimately, educators and administrator make daily decisions without full knowledge of areas like teachers incentives. Maybe more studies like this one will start to bridge the gap between what we think and what we know about education in Memphis Schools and in general.

Grade 10 Math Analytic Geometry help, I have a test and I dont understand this question?
A quadrilateral has vertices P(0,8), Q(-4,4) R(2,-2) and S(6,4). Find the perimeter of the figure whose vertices are the midpoints of the sides of the quadrilateral.
1) AB has slope of 1, CD has slope of 3, so neither
2) AB has slope of -1/-8 or 1/8, CD has slope of 16/-2 or -8. These are negative reciprocals, so they are perpendicular.
3) AB has slope -4/3, CD has slope 9/-5, so neither.
Ok, so basically what you’re suppose to do is put another quadrilateral into the one your teacher has already given you the points for and find the perimeter for the quad inside.
Sorry for the delay I had to graph it out to make sure it worked, because there’s no way you’d need a midpoint for PQ since they don’t collide. They aren’t a corner.
So, what I do is I don’t deal with the Pythagorean theorem because usually you can’t do it in your head and my teacher never let us use calculators on our tests.
Ok, so the corners are PR, PS, SQ, and QR. Plot these out and then just find the midpoints of these lines seperately. Just figure out the slop of the line and then divide it in half.
Ex: PR is a line that spreads across 2 points and up 10. So, the midpoint would be over 1 and up 5 from the bottom point. Making the PR midpoint (1,3) on the graph since the bottom point starts at -2.
Do this for all the sides until you are able to create your new quad in the middle. Then you just count the perimeter.
8th grade math GEOMETRY PLEASE HELP?
okay so i am given a cylinder.
I am told the surface area is 80times pi so 251.2 The radi is 4…I need to find X which is like the heighth of the cylinder.
Can someone show me the formula or how to find the X.
please and thank you
Is there a lot of Geometry on the 10th grade math FCAT?
Is there a lot of Geometry in the 10th grade math FCAT? I’m worried because I’m a sophomore, and last year as a freshman, I was a bad kid and skipped my Algebra 1 class and ended up failing it. I regret it, and now as a 10th grader, I had to retake Algebra 1, meaning that I didn’t take Geometry this year (like I was supposed to).
Anyway, I’ve always passed the math FCAT. I think that I got a 4 on the 9th grade one. I’m alright at math, I guess. But I’m worried because I’m taking the Math FCAT in 3 days and I know NOTHING Geometry. Well, I never actually took a Geometry class…so yeah. Is there a lot of Geometry on the 10th grade math FCAT? What does it primarily focus on? Does it have the gridded responses or is it all multiple choice? I’m really worried because if I fail this, I’ll be in remedial classes and this is also a graduation requirement at my school. And although I’m good at math, I’ve never taken Geometry and I think that this FCAT has a lot of it.
Thank you!
honors 7th grade geometry math help ?
this is a huge grade not hw.
i think i know but
it says state whether ab and cd are parallel , perpendicular or neither.
1)
A (-7 ,2) , B ( -4,5) .. C (6,1) D ( 7,4)
.
..
2) …. A (3,2) B (-5,1) .. C (2,-4) D(0 , 12)
..
3) …. A ( 9 , -3) B (12,-7) C(8,-6) D(3,3)
insanely appreciated
9th grade geometry math question!!!!!!!!!!?
the measures of the side lengths of a triangle are 3, 4, and 5. Classify the triangle as acute. right, or obtuse.
please help me
I am sorry to tell you this, but yeah there are some geometry concepts in the 10th grade Math FCAT.
The concepts are not really that challenging, but make sure you know the following geometrical concepts for the FCAT:
- Angle addition, linear pair postulate, and angle properties.
- Properties and theorems about triangles, including angles measures in triangles and congruency.
- Properties and theorems about quadrilaterals
- Triangles’ similarity rules and theorems (SAS,SSS,ASA,AA,CPTC) Including proportions.
- Pythagorean theorem
- Crcle theorems, arc length, and remember that there are 360 degrees in a circle, 180 in a triangle and 180 in a quadrilateral.
You can find the majority of these concepts in http://www.purplemath.com
Good luck, and don’t fool around kid! You don’t know how important is geometry in the upper level courses, and in the SAT.
