It Was Greek to Me: Improving Your English by Knowing Greek Roots
Author: Celia Webb
Greek provides many important prefixes, suffixes, and roots used in the English language. To understand the full meaning of a word, it is essential to know the original meaning of the roots used to form the word. Not only will your comprehension of the word be more complete and accurate, you will understand many more words since roots and other word parts (i.e. affixes, prefixes, suffixes) occur in many English words. For example, Webster’s Dictionary has seventy-seven listings starting with the Greek root -chrom-.
Root words are most often combined with other word parts to precisely describe a particular phenomena, action, or thing. Continuing with the root word -chrom- an example of this type of combining is chromolithography =chrom (color)+lithos (a stone)+graphien (to write) which is a method of producing color printed pictures using stone or zinc plates. Many roots are much more productive than -chrom- and certain prefixes (like un- meaning not, lack of, the opposite of as in undo) and suffixes (like –ology meaning a specified type of speaking as in eulogy or the science, doctrine, study of, or theory of as in geology) are in hundreds of words. You can greatly improve your command of English by familiarizing yourself with these word parts.
Your command of English spelling will also be strengthened by knowing the origins of a word. Knowing a word originated from Greek gives clues to some of the tricky spellings in English like the silent initial p- in pneumatic and psychopathic.
Here are frequently used Greek roots and their meanings with an example word. Improve your memory of these roots by copying them into a notebook. Write down the root, its definition, and several examples of its use. You can add examples by looking for more in your dictionary. Practice using the words in sentences when writing and speaking. Look for words with these roots in newspaper, magazine, or books you read and underline them. Create flashcards with the Greek root on one side of the card and the meaning or the reverse. The more often you use the word in some way, the better you will remember it.
-aero- (air) aerobics
-angio- (vessel) angioplasty
-anthrop- (human) anthropological
-astro- (constellation) astronomy
-centre- (center) central
-chrom/o- (color) chromatic
-chron- (time) chronograph
-dem- (people) democracy
-hydro- (water) hydroelectric
-kinesis- (movement) kinetic energy
-leuko- (white) leukemia
-litho- (stone) neolithic
-metre- (to measure) meter, geometry
-morph- (form) morphology
-naut- (sailor, ship) astronaut
-path- (feeling, suffering) pathetic
-ped/o- (child, children) pediatrics (do not confuse this Greek root with the Latin root pedi-meaning foot)
-phil/o-(having a strong affinity or love for) philosopher
-phon- (voice, sound) phonograph
-phos-,-photo- (light) phosphorus, photography
-pneu- (to breathe) pneumonia
-pseudo- (false) pseudography
-psych- (soul, mind) psychoanalyze
-tele- (distant) telephone
-therm- (hot) isotherm
Knowing Greek roots can help you discern the meaning of a word and expand your vocabulary exponentially. Study them carefully and your ability to understand precisely what you read and hear will improve.

I need the answers for 3_10H Proofs of Congruence in Triangles in flvs geometry?
Please, if i get a bad grade in this worksheet i go down to a C. I have a B-.Please help me out.
The link can’t be accessed… asking for a password which I do not have.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Geometry Homework Giving Me an Aneurysm!?
I need help on this worksheet for Geometry Homework, I’ve tried to work it out, my moms tried to work it out, I even got two “certified” math teachers to try to help me with this, but they couldn’t kind their behind with both hands, a map, a head start, and a mirror. So if anyone could please help me these three questions, I would greatly appreciate it!

Okay, since the link refuses to open, I’m going to write the problems out.
1) For TRI, the following facts are given:
Segment ANis parallel to Segment RI
AN=6 cm
RI=8cm
TA=3.3cm
NI=1.6cm(These are similar Triangles TAN and TRI)
Use any or all of these facts to answer the following:
A) In a two-column proof format prove TAN ~ TRI
B) Assume TAN is the image of TRI under dialation. Is the dialation an exapnsion or a contraction? What is the scale factor?
C) Calculate AR. Show your work.
D) Use the Side-Splitting Theorem to find TN.
E) What is the ratio of the area of TRI to TAN?
2) The height of one solid limestone square pyramid is 24 m. A similar solid limestone pyramid has a height of 30 m. The volume of the larger pyramid is 16,000 m cubed. Determine each of the following:
A) The Scale factor of the smaller pyramid to the larger pyramid in simplest form.
B)The Ratio of the area of the base of the smaller pyramid to the larger pyramid.
C) Ratio of the volume of the
Continuation-
smaller pyramid to the larger.
D) The volume of the smaller pyramid.
3) For triangle TOE the following facts are given (Again, these are similar triangles OBG and OTE):
TE=6cm
m
OT=2cm
OE=5.8cm
OG=4.35cm
AU=0.45cm
Use this information to answer the following:
A) Why is OBG ~ OTE?
NOw find the missing lengths. Show all work or reasoning. Round non-integral lengths to the nearest hundreth.
B) GE
C) TS
D) OA
E) BT (Use the side-splitting theorem.)
F) SE
G) OU
Sorry you guys can’t view the image, you’ll probably have to draw them out, but please make as much of this information as possible.
1. two sides and the linking angle the same in both triangles
2. two angles and the linking side the same in both triangles
3. all three sides the same length in both cases
10th grade school supply list?
I am taking Biology I Honors, Religion I Creed and Old Testament ( I go to a private catholic school), English II Honors, World Geography, Latin II Honors, and Geometry Honors. I like to have a binder and a folder for each class (if I only need a worksheet or a packet, why bring the whole binder or risk getting the paper wrinkled up). What size binders and notebooks do I need? I’m guessing 1″ or 1 1/2″ for biology, 1″ for religion, 1 1/2″ for English, 1″ or 1 1/2″ for world geography, 1 1/2″ for Latin, and 2″ for geometry. Do I need one of those $120 graphing calculators? Oh and for notebooks I’m guessing a composition book (lab journals) and/or a 3-subject notebook, 1-subject for religion, 3-subject for English, 1-subject for world geography, 3-subject for Latin, and a 5-subject for Geometry. I just bought a North Face Recon backpack. I never have more than two classes back-to-back. I’m sure I will have a textbook for each class. I love to be color-coordinated. It makes everything simpler. Let’s see, um, green for biology, purple for religion, blue for english, red for world geography, orange for latin, and light blue for geography. I only like college-ruled paper, mechanical pencils with grips, Sharpie highlighters, big tab dividers with pockets, and D-ring one-click binders with an overlay. Your input please? Any suggestions?
Money is not a factor.
Sounds good, a planner and calender is also good. Plenty of extra lead, erasers so you don’t run you pencils out so bad that you can no longer use them because you can’t get the eraser out. Get a set of dividers for each binder to be more organized, tests, notes, marked assignments, exam prep ect. a lot of stuff won’t be done in a notebook. Post its and tabs are good for marking off sections, accordion style folder could be a good replacement for a folder for each class and much easier to organize and keep dry just in case. Buy pens in bulk I buy 3 boxes of the normal color I use (blue) and one of black and red for correction and editing, pencil crayons and markers, scissors and glue for projects it’s always good to have your own especially when you have to do homework teachers don’t take the “I didn’t have the supplies” excuse to well it ends in a 15 minute lecture on being prepared…..and okay I’ve said enough I can’t think og anything
ps. decent pocket dividers are larger then zip up binders mine stuck out and when I zipped it up it folded all my paper and eventually after having to zip it up 2 times ruined one of my zippers and never left my shelf all year long so be careful
Make him volunteer to work with the Tea Party!
Assumming that you have a 58 average on your worksheet grade and a 58 average on your tests, then you need to get a 67 or more on each assignment (assuming six assignments left) in order to get a 60/D. That is alot of assuming though!
I would advise you to get help from your teacher or from a friend from here on out. Work hard and study. Keep up with your homework and ask questions to get better understanding. Show your teacher that you are trying and he/she may help you up to a 60 IF you end up with a 59.
***Try harder next year!
3 more weeks and report cards out, my current grade in Geometry is a 58?
I’ve got three weeks. And generally, there’s one worksheet and one exam per week. The worksheets are 15% of the grade and the exams are the rest. What do I have to do to pass? I am stressing, and I didn’t even get credit for the first semester. I’m an A student at everything else but Math isn’t my strong subject. Please offer me some serious guidance.
We only have A B C and F
How should I punish my child for bad grades?
Geometry-97%
Language-100%
Science-100%
GTT-102%
Social Studies-98%
Spanish 1-B-100%
We The People-100%
His school is so grade inflated he doesn’t even bring homework home. His work ethic is horrible and I may not have contacted his teachers, but I know they must think he’s a horrible student. I think I should ground him for 2 weeks for his continuing lack of effort. He even got a 3/5 on a Materials Check and a D on a Language worksheet. How can he slack off on me with everything I’ve done?
Also, I’m a parent. I’m a proud conservative Republican who believes in the Bible’s references to strict parenting. I believe I have the right by THE BOOK to be as strict as I want.
I asked this question because I think I am being two soft. Is 2 months grounding appropriate? Or should I send him to boot camp or refer him to a juvenile corrections facility?
The teachers always take the student’s positions. In fact, one cited teacher-student confidentiality. I’m suspicious.
Biblical law dictates his eyes should be plucked out by ravens for hid not living up to my standards and being lazy.
I think I am being very lenient.
